Milton Track & Field Performs Well at State Meet

School records & top-10 performances highlight Eagle efforts

Powder Springs, GA
McEachern HS
May 12-14

By Coach Andy Carr

This past weekend the Milton Track & Field teams competed in the GHSA Class 7A state meet and recorded some of the best results in school history including a few records.

BOYS

The Eagles scored all their team points on the first day of the meet (13th-19 pts) to outscore 24 schools. Starting off was senior Andrew Dassler in the pole vault. Dassler (2nd-15’6”) tied the school record on his 2nd attempt of that height to get runner-up honors in his last competition in a Milton uniform. In the process the Kennesaw State signee defeated the region champion.

Literally following in his footsteps, junior Devin Dahunsi was competing in the long jump during the vault competition and was able to jump a personal best by over a foot (4th-22’9.5”) which moved him up to the 3rd best jumper all-time in Milton team history. Dahunsi wasn’t done yet and came back later in the day to improve on his school record in the triple jump (3rd-47’0.25”) by close to 6 inches and he jumped that distance twice in the competition.

Also competing in the state meet but not scoring was junior Cory Chambers. In the 3200m (9th-9:45.32) Chambers just missing out on a medal but snatched a personal best by just under a second. Chambers then came back in the 1600m to record close to a 3-second personal best (11th-4:23.99) to become the 10th best performer in school history.

GIRLS

Milton (25th-9 pts) turned back 7 schools with just distance runners competing for the Lady Eagles.

Junior Farrah Frith scored 8 of the points herself in the 1600m & 3200m events. First in the 3200m, Frith (5th-11:07.78) went out with the leaders on a very warm evening and was able to secure a podium finish as many were affected by the high heat & humidity. The next day, Frith (5th-5:08.27) ran a smart & controlled race early in the 1600m and passed many on the last lap to become the 5th best performer in school history. For Frith her 1600m was a 5-second personal best for the distance.

On the first evening of the meet, the Lady Eagles 4×800m (8th-9:50.10) relay team was in contention the entire race and was able to grab the last medal-winning place. The team of sophomores Ella Grace Malcom & Leelah Dennis and seniors Megan Stechschulte & Genevieve Trainor ran a 4-second season’s best and recorded the 4th best performance in school history to score the team’s final point besting 8 schools.

Also competing at the state meet individually in the 800 meters, Ella Grace Malcom (11th-2:21.27) finished 4th in her preliminary heat but was unable to advance to Saturday’s 800m final on time.

After each meet, our Team Coaches & Captains pick out male & female athletes who showed outstanding teamwork, dedication and inspiration to the team and celebrate them with a Meet Award. We are sorry for the delay in reporting these awards, as we were trying to allow athletes time to provide their responses.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR MILTON ATHLETES FOR THEIR PERFORMANCE AT THE 2022 7A SECTIONAL A – REGIONS 1,3,4,5 MEET ON 5/7/22!

The Milton track & field teams travelled to southern Georgia with hopes of getting athletes qualified to the state meet at the GHSA sectionals hosted by Tift Co High School and came away with many Eagles now heading to the state championship meet next weekend.

GIRLS
The Lady Eagles will send 2 individuals and a relay team to the state meet next week at McEachern HS in Powder Springs. In the 1600m (5th-5:21.23) & 3200m (4th-11:27.30), junior Farrah Frith will contend for the state championship after running very tactical races in the sectional meet. Also qualifying in 2 events is sophomore Ella Grace Malcom. In the 800m (7th-2:22.99) Malcom was 4th in her heat and made it to the state meet on time and led-off the 4×800m (5th-9:54.9-times unofficial) relay that included fellow sophomore Leelah Dennis & seniors Megan Stechschulte & Genevieve Trainor. The relay team returns to the state meet with hopes of improving on their 7th place finish from 2021, the inaugural running of the event at the state meet. Also competing for Milton but not qualifying for the state meet was Nora Megenity in the triple jump. Her leap of 34’9.5” (10th) was a slight improvement on her 2nd best performer in school history mark.

BOYS
Milton will advance 3 individuals (2 in 2 events each & one in a single event) to lead the Eagles at the state meet next week. Fellow juniors Devin Dahunsi (Long Jump & Triple Jump) & Cory Chambers (1600m/3200m) made their presence known at the sectional meet and will contend for a podium placing in both events at the state meet. In the triple jump, Dahunsi (2nd-45’5”) used a generous tailwind to garner runner-up honors but just fouled on his 2nd jump that looked to be a close to 1-foot improvement on his school record! In the long jump after a couple of fouls in the first round, Dahunsi (7th-21’6”) got his mark on his 3rd jump and had safely qualified for the state meet. Chambers had two very tactical races which he bided his time near the front and easily qualified in the 1600m (8th-4:37.53) & 3200m (7th-9:53.89) to advance to the state meet. Senior Andrew Dassler easily qualified for the state meet in the pole vault (1st-12’6”) taking only one single jump to make the meet next week where he was 7th a year ago.
Also competing at the sectional meet but not advancing to the state meet were Jaden Bender in the discus (10th-129’6.5”) an improvement on his #5 performance in school history. The boys 4×800m relay team (Brandon Sevel/Jorge Fabregas/Will Conklin/Charlie Reynolds) finishing 12th in 8:56.9 (times unofficial). Ethan Hagel in the 400m (12th-52.20) & Rio Breedlove in the 300m hurdles (13th-44.96).

The state meet will be held at McEachern HS on May 12-14. All field events will be Thursday, May 12th along with the 4×800m relay. Friday, May 13th will feature the 800m semi-finals and the 3200m races. Saturday, May 14th will have the 800m final & 1600m races to conclude the meet & season for Milton.
